.‘Sup with Baseball. The Suisman Shapiro 16-18 team has enjoyed a successful start to the 2009 season, currently with 8 wins and 3 losses. Following last year’s championship, there are several returning players leading the efforts of hard work, winning and having fun, and they are complimented by the addition of several skilled teammates new to the 16-18 team. The family atmosphere in the stands has been enhanced by the addition of announcers and music at our home games. The schedule is posted on Suisman Shapiro page. Think about stopping by and catching a game or two over the next few weeks.
With the conclusion of 13-15 regular season, the District Tournament games are right around the corner. The players who were selected for All-Stars were voted on by their peers last month. East Lyme Babe Ruth is proud to allow its players to choose who will represent them in the District 6 tournament, and those players that were selected should be proud and honored to have been recognized by their friends, teammates, and friendly opponents. Brackets have been posted on the documents page. Please stop by a game to root for our EL guys.
.Fall Baseball. Some folks are already asking when registration for the East Lyme Babe Ruth Fall Baseball will be. At this time, no one has volunteered to coordinate a fall-ball session for East Lyme Babe Ruth. In recent years, registration has begun by mail in August, a couple of live-registration dates were held around Labor Day, and games began shortly thereafter. Traditionally, the fall program has provided baseball to recent “Little League graduates” through the baseball age of 15 and has seen enrollment of about 60 players from East Lyme, Niantic and Old Lyme. Without a coordinator in place, there are currently no plans for a Fall Baseball session in 2009. Please consider taking a lead in this effort for the league.
.*Looking Ahead to Baseball 2010 – You are needed!. It has been my pleasure to volunteer with East Lyme Babe Ruth for over eight years (and five years before that with Little League). As mentioned in the June newsletter, I will no longer be serving as president of the league beginning with the next term. I urge you to consider taking on the role of president for the 2009-10 term to ensure that baseball opportunities for the youth in our towns continue for years to come! While much of the current support staff is willing to serve another year and I am happy to offer my support and guidance, new faces with energy and passion are really what’s required. If you can’t do it yourself, perhaps you know of someone who might be well suited for the task. If so, please talk to them and tell them why you think they should get more involved. Offer to help them. It is a core of dedicated volunteers – friendly, with common goals – that drives the success of the league. Give it a go! If you would like to discuss the role of president, please feel free to contact me at the phone or email listed below.
.ELBR – The Big Five-Oh! . Did you know that East Lyme Babe Ruth has turned 50?! That’s right! ELBR began its first charter as an official Babe Ruth league in 1959. Since then hundreds of volunteers have devoted time, heart and talents to the league, and probably thousands of kids have stepped to the plate on our fields. Do you have a “vintage” photo of volunteers or players from your ELBR years to share? We’d be interested in posting a digital photo or two on the site over the next month or so. Please
to send a photo and comments (any names you remember, what age you were, what field you played on, significant coaches or volunteers, etc.).
Limited edition t-shirts are available (while supplies last) commemorating the 50th Anniversary of East Lyme Babe Ruth. Click here for the order form. The sizes remaining in stock are limited, so please act soon if you want to be assured of getting yours! Smaller sizes are great for 12-Year-Olds who will begin the next 50 years of baseball in East Lyme!
See the Ball, Hit the Ball In 1921 Columbia University did an extensive study on Babe Ruth in an effort to learn the secret of The Babe’s remarkable hitting achievements. The results of these tests indicated a very strong relationship between vision and batting success. Since then hitters, pitchers, and athletes from all sports across the globe have placed great importance on vision care. Dr. Elizabeth C. McMunn combines her interest in sports with her passion for vision care at her practice in East Lyme: Advanced Eyecare. Dr. McMunn and her staff look forward to the opportunity to provide your family with friendly, professional vision care. In addition, Advanced Eyecare is also an excellent source for contact lenses, prescription sports glasses and sunglasses. Advanced Eyecare is conveniently located in the Liberty Bank building in Flanders. We thank Dr. McMunn and her practice for its continued enthusiastic support of East Lyme Babe Ruth.
